PROGRESS UPDATES:

  • A ceremonial ribbon cutting will take place on December 15, 2020 at 10 a.m. Residents are welcomed to attend (masks are required). Building tours will be offered during the event in groups of ten or less. Alternatively, individuals may call the Police Station administrative staff at 614-568-2060 to schedule a separate time.

  • September 12, 2020: Project is on schedule for completion in late November/early December. The project is underbudget. A ribbon cutting ceremony is being planned for December including public tours (in groups less than ten, masks required).

  • April 14, 2020: Walls are constructed.
  • February 2, 2020: Foundation and walls are beginning to take shape on the construction site, easily visible from Big Walnut Road.
  • May 12, 2019: Genoa Township, Ohio has earned the highest possible credit rating of “AAA” from Standard & Poors Global Ratings. Bond Ratings are a method of evaluating relative credit risk and are obtained before a public body can issue bonds to finance major Capital projects. Like a personal credit score, the stronger the rating, the lower the interest rate on the bonds; potentially saving borrowing costs. Genoa is just one of three townships to earn the distinction. October 31, 2019: A groundbreaking ceremony was scheduled to be held but had to be canceled due to weather conditions.  The event will not be rescheduled but construction will begin as scheduled.
  • Genoa Township Maintenance Department acquired free fill dirt and graded it to prepare the project site saving $200,000 in construction costs.

  • October 15, 2019: Seven companies returned bids to be selected to provide construction services for the new facility. The Board of Trustees will review a contract to proceed with the bid submitted by Gutknecht Construction.
  • August 27, 2019: An invitation to bid on the project will became available on Township "Bids and Contracts" webpage beginning at 9 a.m.
  • May 17 - 22, 2019: Township residents are being given first priority to purchase police station bonds with a minimum purchase of $5000. Genoa Township has engaged Baird as underwriter to market and sell the bonds to the public. Express interest by Friday, May 17, 2019 to Mike Burns of Baird at 614-629-6967 or by email at mkburns@rwbaird.com.  Bonds are expected to be sold to those outside of the Township beginning on Wednesday, May 22, 2019.
  • April 30, 2019: Genoa Township extends its thanks to residents Larry and Julie King who have donated a new flagpole and flag for the entrance of the new Police Station. Larry and Julie presented the donation to Chief Gammill at Township Hall.
  • Construction documents are being finalized to go out to bid summer 2019.
  • April 1, 2019: Previously, the site for the new police station was home to the American Legion; a nostalgic place for many residents but one that had deteriorated beyond repair posing a safety concern.  The Legion building was abated for asbestos and demolished to make way for the new police station. The skilled workers that make up the Township’s Maintenance Department completed many tasks to prepare for construction which has reduced projected site clearing costs.
  • The Fiscal office is preparing to sell the bonds that were approved by voters. There will be an informational meeting prior to the sale for residents who might be interested in purchasing the bonds.

  • Major construction is expected to begin in October and, if all goes as planned, the building should be ready for move-in November 2020.
  • February 21, 2019: The Township's architect, Horne and King Architects presented the final design and budget to the Board of Trustees for their approval at the meeting.  The resolution passed with a 2-1 vote. Therefore, the project will move forward on schedule, and activity on the construction site will increase.
  • After much research, discussion, and prioritization, the size of the new facility is planned to be 16,387 square feet (an 11% reduction from the original proposal of 18,298 square feet).

  • The original estimate to build, furnish, and equip the new facility was $6,837,400, not including the purchase of the land which was about $497,000. Finally, the Police Department's existing capital fund would pay some of the costs for furniture, equipment, and other “soft costs”, with a minimum amount of $500,000.

  • February 21, 2019: Building plans are being refined, the project is, for the time, under budget at $6,831,000, including the cost of the land (where it had previously been accounted for as a separate cost). $580,300 will be spent from the Police Department's existing levy funds to pay for “soft costs.”

  • November 6, 2018: Genoa Township residents passed a .8 mil property tax bond levy for the construction of a new facility to house the Genoa Township Police Department.
  • The Township acquired a parcel of land on the northwest corner of Big Walnut and Route 3 to serve as the site for a new facility.

  • 1970's era building was not meeting the needs of the Police Department or residents. Take a virtual building tour to review existing conditions.
